Most people associate perfect vision as 20/20 vision, a measure of visual acuity where a person can see a specific-sized letter at a 20-foot distance. While visual acuity is an essential vision test, other areas of vision including eye teaming/alignment, depth perception, eye tracking, focusing, peripheral vision, and visual processing, allow us to sustain clarity and attention for reading, peripheral awareness with driving, and balancing and moving through space. Our testing goes far beyond 20/20 vision testing and provides an understanding of how the entire visual system is functioning, particularly if vision is supporting reading and other visual tasks or if vision is interfering with daily activities.
All of our vision services begin with an extensive understanding of you or your child’s vision, particularly regarding visual symptoms, medical history, and goals. From there, we offer you a wide range of services designed for the patient’s unique symptoms and needs, including:
We go far beyond traditional eye exams by using up to 35 different tests to measure how your eyes work individually, together and how the brain and eyes communicate. That provides us with a holistic picture of your vision and processing, allowing us to diagnose your condition and recommend a treatment plan. We invite you to learn more about what makes our evaluations so thorough and effective at diagnosing complex conditions here.
For some patients, before an NVE we will also require a Medical Eye Exam to make sure your eyes are healthy and to update glasses or contact prescriptions. During this exam, Dr. Talaber assesses nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia to determine if glasses or contacts will help you see clearer at distance. In some cases, this can include offering complex types of prescriptions like Prism Glasses. A Medical Eye Exam can include dilating your eyes, especially if that has not occurred within the last year or an event such as a traumatic brain injury has occurred since the last exam. In most cases we can accept the records from a Routine Eye Exam from a Primary Care Optometrist or Ophthalmologist if it occurred in the last 12 months.
After proper evaluations, visual deficits can be uncovered and vision therapy can remediate these conditions. The eyes are really an extension of our brain, and each part relies on the other to have clear, comfortable, accurate, and effortless vision. Treatment programs can vary depending on the diagnosis, but all of them rely heavily on resolving visual performance deficiencies through specialized techniques. The majority of these treatment protocols need to be guided by a vision therapy practitioner and supplemented with at home techniques. The duration of these treatment programs is entirely dependent on the severity of symptoms and type of diagnosis, but typically range from 15 to 30 sessions.
We differ from most practices by having expertise across several types of vision therapy programs and types of patients, including:
It is very common for our patients to have a missed or incorrect diagnosis prior to visiting the Neuro-Vision Therapy Institute. The vision services we offer differ from those at a primary care eye exam because our team specializes in complex vision conditions. Our expertise starts with Dr. Alexandra Talaber OD, FCOVD, FAAO, who is a double board certified Neuro Optometrist, fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, and the American Academy of Optometry. Furthermore, our entire Vision Therapist Team consists of experienced, passionate practitioners that are either board certified or in the process of earning their board certification.
